A massive register in one volume with an excellent index and table of contents. Includes civil, diplomatic, legal, military, naval, and ecclesiastical officials for England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and India, and also colonial governors and bishops and the orders of knighthood. Generally only the higher officials are listed. The chronology dates from the 1880's as far back as information was available. The list of sovereigns of the world is also extensive.

The official publication for governmental statements, announcements, orders, proclamations, ceremonies, regulations, etc., and for military, naval, civil, and ecclesiastical appointments. During the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars official pronouncements and battle reports predominated. Thereafter the Gazette became a source for the appointments of individuals. Annual indices. The Index to the London Gazette, 1830-1883, does not include the appointments.
