From Duke University Libraries, vol. 15, #2 “Collections Highlight: Documenting Islam and the Middle East…”
“The Nancy and Louis Dupree Collection comprises about 5,000 items, 200 of which are also located in the Special Collections Library. Reflecting the careers and interests of their donors, the materials in the Dupree Collection focus on the anthropology, art and archaeology, folklore, linguistics, and history of Afghanistan. There are also significant holdings on Islam, the Central Asian Republics and South Asia. The items housed in the Special Collections Library include 19th century British accounts of the Afghan Wars and subsequent military campaigns as well as often richly illustrated travel descriptions.”
Art in Afghanistan

This short guide aims to provide an introduction* to resources for the study of Afghanistan's rich heritage from prehistoric to modern, representing many cultures, religions, and dynasties. “
The Bamiyan Buddhas were carved out of a mountain and and were believed to have been among the largest Buddhas in the world. They are thought to have been created between the 3rd and 4th centuries, and destroyed by the Taliban in March 2001.
