Summer Reading 2007 - Charrette Challenge

Duke Libraries. Students working.

Charrette Challenge (First-Year Students)

Background and Objective:

  • The Best of Enemies (BoE) highlights the economic and social history of Durham, your new hometown.  Many places in the book are well-known Durham landmarks, and many of the complicated issues of race and class featured in the book endure today.
  • Your goal is to design a project that showcases an aspect of Durham’s history, preferably related to the book.  Consider picking a person, a place, an event –  whatever interests you.
  • Completed projects will be displayed at Best Fest and then provided to interested middle and high schools in Durham.
  • Eligibility: First-year students only.

 Logistics:

  • Interested groups should attend one of the information sessions in the Thomas Room of Lilly Library (Aug. 27th 6:00 – 6:30pm; Sept 3rd & 4th 9:00 – 9:30pm).
  • Each dorm will have $300 divided between one or more groups to spend on the projects (save your receipts!). Dorms may enter more than one project.
  • Every dorm that completes a project will be given $200 in discretionary spending. Projects must be delivered for display at Best Fest on Thursday, October 11th.
  • The projects can take the form of a written report, oral presentation, video, or website.  Any media is acceptable – so be creative.  The projects will be judged by community members and featured on the library website.
  • The winning group of the Charrette Challenge will be announced at Best Fest. The winning group’s dorm will be awarded an additional $1000.

Project Support

The nature and the format of your project is up to you!  Below are some helpful resources for different project types.

Websites or Multimedia

There are several resources on campus for creating websites or multimedia projects, if that's what you're planning.  OIT's Multimedia Project Studios are convenient, supported multimedia production facilities open to all students.   Looking for a place to host your website?  Duke provides personal  and group web space.  Need training on creating websites or multimedia?  Attend a workshop or receive on-demand training from Student Technology Services.
