Duke traditionally selects a significant novel or piece of non-fiction as the venue for having incoming students enter the intellectual life of the university. This year, all entering first year students have been sent a copy of The Best of Enemies: Race and Redemption in the New South by Osha Gray Davidson. The book provides background on the economic and social history of students' new hometown. Many of the places referenced in the book are well-known landmarks in Durham, and many of the complicated issues of race and class raised in the book endure even today.
