Kris is the Japanese Studies librarian and Head of the International and Area Studies department in Perkins library. She spends most of her time working with students and faculty who are interested in Japan, including students and faculty from NC State and UNC. While she trained to be a professor, she views librarianship as both her career and her avocation; she enjoys connecting people with information whether it be in print, electronic or another person. She particularly values the chance to take on new challenges, learn new things and meet new people.
Originally from Philadelphia, she went to college in Minnesota and graduate school in Massachusetts before moving to North Carolina in 1977. Her neighbor says that she is from “up there.” She has lived in Japan twice, once in 1970 and again from 1980-82. She gets back as often as she can, and tries to take the time to explore places she has not been. Living in Raleigh, she rides the TTA to Durham, and at home enjoys gardening, reading, swimming, the NC symphony, and her neighbors.
