Symposium Overview

"Neither Model Nor Muse," the 3rd biennial symposium of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture, took place October 26-October 27, 2007. All events are free and open to the public.

Programming for the symposium included:

• Opening performance by the Common Woman Chorus, whose papers are held by the Bingham Center.
• Interactive workshops and panels on 18th and 19th century domestic arts, documentary film and photography, hip hop, craftivism, gender performance, and book arts.
• Artist demonstrations and student performances.
• Choreo Collective and Carolina Wren Press will present Couplets, a collaborative performance of poetry and dance. The papers of Carolina Wren Press are housed at the Bingham Center.
• Four exhibits on women in the arts, featuring materials from archival collections and student-created art.

Vision

We are interested in exploring the ways in which women have expressed themselves through three centuries and many art forms. By means of exhibits, performances, workshops, and other sessions, and from the perspective of students, faculty, staff, scholars, and, of course, artists, we will consider domestic, visual, literary, and performing arts. All of the symposium activities — some academic, others interactive/participatory, and a few that are totally "hands on" — will connect our materials to a dialog about women and artistic expression. In this way we aim to increase awareness about the history of women's involvement in and their unique approach to a wide range of art forms.
