Historical Note

Biographical / Historical

Stephanie Reinhart (1944-2002) began working at the American Dance Festival in 1977 as the Director of Planning and Development and became Co-Director with Charles L. Reinhart in 1993. While on the board Stephanie traveled to many countries to view dance and lecture on American modern dance and arts administration, and in 1993 she was awarded a Fulbright research grant to study modern dance in Argentina.

Stephanie’s contributions to the American Dance Festival include the development of ADF’s International Choreographer’s Commissioning Program as well as the creation of the mini ADFs that have been held in various countries. Stephanie often invited companies she discovered while traveling to perform at the American Dance Festival and, in this way, introduced the American public to many new and diverse dance scenes including Japan’s Butoh and the French contemporary dance boom. Furthermore, Stephanie was instrumental in the development of modern dance in parts of South America, Africa, Europe, and China, where she and Charles helped to create China’s first modern dance company. In 2002 she was awarded the medal of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters for her contributions to furthering dance in France and throughout the world.

Stephanie Reinhart graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin in 1966 with a degree in Cultural History. She went on to receive a fellowship for graduate studies in American Literary and Cultural History from George Washington University from 1966 to 1967 and then attended the Harvard University Summer Institute in Arts Administration in 1974. Stephanie spent several years as a staff member for Congressman Robert W. Kastenmeier before joining the staff of the National Endowment for the Arts in 1969, where she served as Program Administrator for the Endowment’s Dance and Education Programs as well as on the planning and development of the Artists-in-Schools Program.

Stephanie served as a Co-Director for Dance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, as a member of the Dance Notation Bureau’s Professional Advisory Committee, and as Co-Chair of the World Dance Alliance’s Promoting Dance Committee. She was a panelist for the Kentucky and North Carolina State Arts Councils, president of the board of directors for Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians, and a consultant and board member for Martha Clarke’s Crowsnest Dance Company. She has contributed to the books East Meets West in Dance: Voices in the Cross-Cultural Dialogue and Dancing Female: Lives and Issues of Women in Contemporary Dance. In 1999, she along with Charles Reinhart, received the Dance Notation Bureau Service Award, and in 2002 she received an Emmy Award as Co-Executive Producer of the PBS series Free to Dance and a Dance Magazine Award. She died of Leukemia at age 58 in 2002.
