Collection Overview

The Frank Baker Papers date from 1641 through 2002, with the majority of the materials dating from the 1800s to the 1990s. The collection houses correspondence, articles, pamphlets, extensive subject and research files, clippings, publicity, a few audio recordings and microfilm, and other materials documenting the professional career and life of Frank Baker, historian of Methodism and particularly of the life and career of minister John Wesley, considered the founder of British Methodism. The collection is arranged in the following series: Audiovisual Materials, Baker Collections Files; Correspondence; Libraries and Archives; Ministry; Personal Files; Printed Material; Professional Service; Scrapbooks and Albums; Subject Files; Teaching Materials; and Writings and Research. Many of the series are divided into subseries, and two are also followed by an Oversize Materials subseries. Note that early dates usually represent reproductions, not originals, although the collection does house some original research materials.

Topics covered by the materials in the collection include: the history and development of Methodism and of the Wesley family; the history of the Church of England, and the Methodist Church in England, the U.S., and other countries; the development of academic research on Methodism and its publications; the history of the Baker book and manuscript collections in the Duke University Libraries; music and hymnology; and the development of the Wesley Works Series, a publishing project headed by Baker. There are abundant research materials on notable individuals associated with Methodism such as John and Charles Wesley, many other Wesley family members, and others such as William Grimshaw and Francis Asbury.

The largest series is the Subject Files (122 boxes), research files assembled by Baker on approximately 1500 topics related to the Wesley family and the history of Methodism and the Methodist Church. Another large series is Writings and Research (48 boxes), containing files of research notes, correspondence, print materials, and publicity related to each of Baker's published works. There are also many student writings in the collection and other materials related to Baker's teaching. Among the Personal Files are biographical files on Frank Baker; awards and honors; travel-related items, and two portrait photographs of Baker's parents. Baker's personal hobbies are reflected in the stamp collecting materials and a group of Victorian-era monogram and crest albums and "libri amicorum," or friendship albums that round out the collection.

Correspondence prior to 1960, when Baker still lived in England, may be particularly of note to researchers interested in the provenance of materials in the various Baker collections at Duke. These letters often refer to his attempts to discover and acquire Wesleyan and Methodist research materials in the possession of private individuals, professional dealers, churches, local historical societies, and other organizations. The content of folders covering this period may range from itemized receipts to lengthy discussions and evaluations of the subject matter and authenticity of materials. Arranged chronologically to the year level.

Small group of albums and scrapbooks from England, chiefly Victorian-era, collected by Frank Baker. They do not seem to have any particular association with or focus on Methodism; his interest in certain pieces may stem in part from his own English origins. One genre of albums contain collections of pasted-in stamps, crests, monograms, and other emblems, while another group takes the form of friendship albums, also known as "libri amicorum," containing inscriptions, cards, writings, and sketches from friends. These house an assortment of memorabilia, ephemera, original and copied writings, and fine sketches and drawings. Two seem to have their origins in Yorkshire, where Baker was born. A few have small photographs laid in or mounted. Bound in leather or board covered with paper, some with gilt tooling. Height given in centimeters.

Album: ephemera and stamps, 1865-1868 and undated

Small album, originally bought from a Bayswater bookseller, unknown owner. Contains over a dozen pasted-in colorful Christmas-season cards, many stamps in the form of arms, monograms, and crests, cards, and a few pressed plants. There are a few handwritten explanatory notes accompanying the crests and monograms. Some of the monograms are from Russia, with Cyrillic characters. Includes a few handwritten notes with dates of travel - India, 1868, and Mt. Sinai, 1865, with a pencil sketch of the latter with water and a boat in the foreground. There is also one tiny photograph of a man, possibly the owner.

(15 cm., approx. 40 pages)
Box 233
Album: stamps, crests, and monograms, after 1897

Anonymous album bound in stamped cloth on boards containing stamps with intricate and colorful arms, monograms, crests, and other cut-out emblems. Symbols represent royalty, nobility, military units, hotels, ships, English cities, clubs, schools, and commercial enterprises such as banks and insurance agencies. Last pages contain many advertisements from the coin and stamp dealers (the Lincolns, London) who sold this particular model of collector's album; latest date on the stamps advertised for sale is 1897.

(21.5 cm., approx. 60 pages)
Box 233
Album: ephemera and stamps, after 1861

Album sold by Marcus Ward & Co., owned by a Percival B. Walker (inscription on inside cover), housing colorful and intricate stamps of arms, monograms, crests, and other symbols. Symbols represent royalty, nobility, military units, hotels, ships, English cities, clubs, schools, and commercial enterprises. A stamp mentions the late Prince Albert, leading to the dating of the album. Bound in leather with gilt edges and stamping.

(15 cm., circa 40 pages)
Box 233
Friendship album, 1904-1909

Friendship album according to an inside cover inscription belonging to "A. Mabel Hall" of Blackthorn House, Bacup, Lancashire, England. Entries includes pen and ink sketches of animals, people, and flowers, as well as poems, aphorisms, and other inscriptions, almost all dated, by men and women chiefly from Lancashire; they may have been the album owner's school friends. Two individuals added "Lowther College" to their names, which was a private school in Lancashire for girls.

(20.5 cm., approx. 60 pages)
Box 234

Many of the letters, research, and transcriptions by Baker and other scholars here expand or comment upon the complex relationships among the diaries and journals of John Bennet, Grace (Murray) Bennet, and Richard Viney, all of which, as transcribed by Marmaduke Riggall in the 1920s, are held in the Frank Baker Collection of Wesleyana and British Methodism, Volumes Series, Writings Subseries.

Family members are identified here by their relationship to JW (1703-1791) and/or Charles Wesley (1707-1788), cited as JW or CW, respectively. In addition to FB's correspondence, notes, and printed materials, many folders contain extensive transcriptions and photocopies of original manuscript letters, journals, and writings by Wesley family members. Original manuscript items and many 18th and 19th century engravings present in these folders are being transferred to the Frank Baker Collection of Wesleyana and British Methodism, in most cases to the Wesley Family Series. Separation sheets and, where feasible, photocopies of originals have been left in the folders in this subseries. Subseries is arranged by family member, chronologically by date of birth, with a concluding folder group of various topics.

Card files have been minimally identified and described, and arranged in three groups: Quotations and Concordances, Bicentennial Edition, Wesley's Library and Reading, and Other Cardfiles. Card counts are approximate, and total approximately 50,000 cards. The various files were numbered and original order has been maintained, with some changes to house like sizes together.

Quotations used by John and/or Charles Wesley, undated

Four files indexing quotations used by John (or perhaps Charles, at times) Wesley. The first two boxes house two files for quotations used by JW, one for English and the other for foreign languages (usually Latin); both are organized alphabetically by topic or keyword. The third box houses two more files for sources of his quotations, arranged by author. A note at the beginning of the first file indicates that Baker thought he had indexed and cross-referenced about 800 quotations in all.

(3500 cards)
Box 139-141
Concordances to JW's works, 1970s-1985 and undated

Four files that somewhat complement the quotations indexes above, but also greatly expand into preparations for a general concordance. A note in the first box indicates that Baker inherited most of this unpublished work, Notes for a Wesley Concordance, from George Lawton in 1974. Lawton appears to have provided the first three indexes here, which Baker expanded at times. The first index is for aphorisms (Box 142, 250 entries). The second index is a general concordance (Boxes 142-146, 6500 entries). The third index is for proverbs and slang and colloquial expressions (Boxes 146-147, 1200 entries). Following this is a series on unlabeled cards that may be duplicates, then the concordances conclude with Baker's own index of Christian names in Wesley's writings (Box 147, 250 entries).

Separated materials: articles by George Lawton. See folder for these indexes housed in Subject Files, Card Files Information Folders.

(8500 cards)
Box 142-147

Large set of card files that are often related to volumes of the Bicentennial Edition of the Works of John Wesley, for which Frank Baker served as General Editor. Files have been slightly rearranged to reflect the sequence of volumes in the Works. These files often complement other documents to be found in the related collection, the Wesley Works Archive.

Explanatory Notes upon the New Testament (Bicentennial Ed. Volumes 5-6)--alphabetical topic index, undated
(300 cards)
Box 148
The Methodist Societies: History, Nature, and Design (Bicentennial Ed. Vol. 9)--alphabetical by topic, undated
(700 cards)

Separated materials: printed index to Volume 9 housed in Subject Files, Card Files Information Folders.

Box 148
The Methodist Societies: Minutes of the Conference (Bicentennial Ed. Vol. 10), undated

Several indexes, mainly related to material that was excluded from the published volume. The first file, American Preachers (Boxes 149-150), provides the names and chronological outlines of the stationing of approximately 500 18th century Methodist preachers in the United States. Following this is a similar but much longer file for British preachers (Box 149), outlining the careers of some 1000 preachers. A keyword index to the Minutes, from 1744-1791, follows these files in Box 150; and the group concludes with a short name index of circuits in Britain. The last two files house approximately 800 and 100 entries, respectively.

(2400 cards)
Box 148-150
Theological writings, Pastoral writings, and Primitive Physic, undated

Three alphabetical topic indexes for Doctrinal and Controversial Treatises, Social/Political Tracts, and one portion of Medical Writings (Bicentennial Ed. Volumes 12, 14, and 17, respectively).

(1500 cards)
Box 151-152
Letters (Bicentennial Ed. Volumes 25-31) indexes and files, undated

Extensive card files that index the letters of JW in a variety of ways: chronological order; index to letters I-II; index to Letters III (in preparation as of 2011); non-Telford letters; and archival locations of Wesley letters worldwide. Baker's instructions from the first card of the extensive index of "non-Telford" letters (entries that did not appear in the previous standard version, by John Telford), give some idea of the value of this index of Wesley letters that have yet to appear in a scholarly edition: "Index, JW letters, 1756-1791. Separate card for each Name, Place, Subject. Include towns for recipients and towns from which JW wrote, but JW himself, nor recipient. List entries by date. List all names and places. List all theological subjects, scriptural quotations, historical themes, illnesses, etc...".

(6000 cards)
Box 152-157
Bibliography (Bicentennial Ed. Volumes 33-34) indexes and files, undated

Extensive card file bibliographies of Wesleyan and Methodist writing. There seem to be three bibliographies represented: one that may be preparatory for both the Bibliography volumes of the Bicentennial Edition and for editions of Baker's own A Union Catalogue of the Publications of John and Charles Wesley (3000 cards); one that is covers Methodist and Wesleyan literature and scholarship in general rather than just work by the Wesleys (12,000 cards); and one that may be a keyword index to the unpublished, partial draft of the Bibliography that Baker completed circa 1981 (700 cards). All are heavily annotated with descriptive and intellectual analysis. Card counts are approximate.

Box 158-165

Baker retained copies of a number of his students' papers at Duke, with the intent that certain of them be included in the archive for the intended "Wesley Research Centre" he mentions over the years in his correspondence and other documents. Materials in this subseries comprise a portion of that student work. Several of the students represented here went on to become prominent Wesleyan and Methodist scholars in their own right, including Richard P. Heitzenrater, who succeeded Baker as General Editor of the Wesley Bicentennial Edition. The first folder in the subseries contains a 1991 memo by Baker in which he lists many of the students and papers gathered in this subseries. Arranged alphabetically by author's surname.

A large collection of research and production files for all of Frank Baker's writings, published and unpublished. A subseries for monographs is arranged by the bibliography numbers established by Elizabeth Hart in her volume on the works of Baker, also included in the first box of the subseries. Files contain correspondence; notes; clippings; printed material such as pamphlets, maps, histories, and reprints; publicity; drafts and proofs; and research for each of the works. Note that early dates often represent reproductions, not originals. A separate subseries houses the research files for Baker's thesis, later published in book form, on William Grimshaw, Methodist minister, and religion in 18th century England. Also includes a subseries of unpublished and unfinished works, and a subseries of writings by other individuals collected by or sent to Baker.

Materials comprised mainly of typescripts and clippings with a scattering of correspondence. Arranged in chronological order.

Articles, essays, reviews, creative writing, and other pieces left unfinished at Baker's death. Early dates reflect content of copies, not necessarily original document from that date. Albin, Thomas, R., Early Methodist Letters, 1988-1989

Extensive printouts of data derived from unpublished doctoral research Albin conducted at Cambridge University, circa 1978-1982. Compiles the texts and lists the archival sources of several hundred Methodist letters and autobiographies written between 1725 and 1790. The first ten folders contain the raw data; the final seven folders contain indexes of the material sorted by various criteria, such as author, date, and preachers' station. Albin made this research available to Baker to use in the late 1980s when he was serving as Textual Editor of the Wesley Bicentennial Edition.
