         <head>Biographical Note</head>
         <p>Barton was a resident of Winchester (Frederick County), Va. and active in the Protestant Episcopal Church.</p>
      </bioghist>
      <scopecontent>
         <head>Collection Overview</head>
         <p>The collection contains correspondence and other papers relating to Mrs. Barton's activities in the Protestant Episcopal Church in her home town of Winchester, Va., and on the state level.  There are also letters from her husband, Robert Thomas Barton, lawyer and state politician, discussing political matters in Virginia, the stationing of troops along the Mexican border during Woodrow Wilson's first administration, and Wilson's election campaign of <date>1916.</date>  Other correspondents include Philip Alexander Bruce, Lucian Carr, Robert Atkinson Gibson, and Marie Elizabeth Jeffries Hobart.</p>
         <p>An unprocessed addition to the collection contains more correspondence between Gertrude Barton's family members and friends.; and household bills.</p>
