Preliminary Inventory of the Arthur Einstein Papers, circa 1990-2001
Collection Overview
Collection comprises commercials, mailers, and other printed material in paper, video, audio, and digital formats used by advertising agencies to present their business philosophy and services to prospective clients. One Israeli agency is represented, as well as several that specialize in healthcare, public relations, or the Hispanic market. The collection also includes material connected with Einstein's involvement as a consultant in reviews, when advertisers were in the process of selecting an agency to manage their marketing and advertising accounts. The records have been divided into three groupings: Agency Reels, Agency Mailers, and Reviews (the Reviews are closed).
The Agency Reels consist of compilations of primarily television commercials that illustrate the work of each advertising agency. The commercials are contained on 265 VHS, five BetacamSP, and three 3/4" U-matic videocassette tapes; five audiocassette tapes, and one CD-RW (7 electronic documents).
The Agency Mailers group consists of the printed and audio-visual documents advertising agencies create to present themselves to prospective clients (i.e. "credentials"). Nearly all the credentials are from the U.S. offices of both small firms and large multinationals, the latter including BBDO, Ogilvy & Mather, and Leo Burnett. The mailers usually contain background on the agency and a list of its resources and clients. Some are present only in A-V or electronic form (no paper documents); of these there are 23 VHS videocassette tapes; four audiocassette tapes; one 16 mm film reel; and one CD-ROM (43 electronic documents).
The Reviews (closed to researchers until 2011) document Einstein's participation in agency reviews for seven major advertisers, primarily in the realm of banking/finance and computers, including Bankers Trust, Compaq, NYSE, IBM, Oppenheimer, Thomas Weisel Partners, and N.B. Montgomery. The Reviews include, in addition to paper records, 11 VHS tapes and one 3/4" U-matic videocassette tape, as well as three audiocassette tapes.
Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.
