<p>Collection contains correspondence, scrapbooks, albums, clippings, addresses, writings, and other materials that concern the personal lives and careers of the <famname>Evans family, </famname>particularly <persname>Emanuel J. </persname>and <persname>Sara Evans, </persname>their sons, <persname>Eli </persname>and <persname>Robert, </persname>and <persname>Emanuel's </persname>brother, <persname>Monroe. </persname>The family owned and operated <corpname>United Department Stores, </corpname>and for twelve years, <date>1951</date> to <date>1963</date>, <persname>Emanuel Evans </persname>was mayor of <geogname>Durham, NC. </geogname>He was also very active in his synagogue, was a president of <corpname>VISTAS, </corpname>and participated actively in the <corpname>University of North Carolina's Alumni Association. </corpname>There are two scrapbooks on <persname>Emanuel Evans's </persname>mayoral terms and a similar volume and other materials devoted to <persname> Mrs. Evans's </persname>activities as leader of <corpname>Hadassah </corpname>including items pertaining to <geogname>Israel. </geogname>
<persname> Mr. Evans's </persname>mayoral correspondence is divided into a general file and a subject file. In pictures and personal correspondence, the <famname>Nachamson family </famname>is often represented. One early clipping from a <geogname>Fayetteville, N.C. </geogname>newspaper, tells of <persname>Mr. Evans's </persname>sister being refused teaching positions because of her Jewish faith. <persname>Eli Evans </persname>is a correspondent and writer, led the establishment of the <corpname>National Jewish Archives of Broadcasting, </corpname>and was on the staff of the <corpname>Carnegie Foundation </corpname>that helped launch <subject>"Sesame Street." </subject>He was president of the UNC student body and a number of items in the collection concern his presidency. Also included is an address of <persname>Eli Evans </persname>presented during the conference on <subject>Southern-Jewish history </subject>in 1976, <persname>Eli Evans's </persname>vita, his unpublished diary of the <subject>Kissinger shuttle, </subject> and a large number of his writings, many concerning U.S. politics, minorities, and <subject>Jews in the South. </subject>There is a reprint of a chapter from his book, <title render="italic">The Provincials,</title> and reports from the <corpname>Charles H. Revson Foundation, </corpname>of which he is president. Also included are materials concerning <persname>Eli's </persname>brother <persname>Robert, </persname>a correspondent with <corpname>CBS, </corpname>who continued on as a television executive. One entire scrapbook is devoted to the writings of <persname>Mildred </persname>and <persname>Madeline Evans, </persname>
            <persname>Monroe's </persname>wife and daughter. </p>
