<head>Biographical and Historical Note</head>

<p>Emmet Gowin, born in Danville, Virginia, in 1941, is an American photographer and Professor of Visual Arts in the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University. </p>

<p>Gowin received his MFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1967. He specializes in intimate portraits, particularly of his wife and other family members. He is also known for aerial photography, and since the 1980s has documented sites throughout the world. Gowin's work has been exhibited in museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He has won awards throughout his career, with notable ones including a Guggenheim fellowship (1974), two NEA fellowships (1977 and 1979), and a Pew Fellowship in the Arts (1993-1994). </p>

<p>Gowin's work has also been published in several monographs, including <title render="italic">Emmet Gowin/Photographs</title> (1976); <title render="italic">Emmet Gowin: Photographs, 1966-1983</title> (1983); <title render="italic">Emmet Gowin/Photographs: This Vegetable Earth is But A Shadow</title> (1990); <title render="italic">Emmet Gowin/Aerial Photographs</title> (1998); <title render="italic">Emmet Gowin: Changing the Earth</title> (2002); and <title render="italic">Mariposas Nocturnas--Edith in Panama</title> (2006).</p>

<p>Emmet Gowin is also the co-author, with Elijah Gowin, of <title render="italic">Maggie</title>, published by Tin Roof Press in 2008.</p>

They have been separated from the book due to preservation concerns. The monograph <title render="italic">Maggie</title>, available in Lilly Library at Duke University, was Number 7 of a Special Edition of Twenty-five, published by Tin Roof Press, September 2008.</p>

<p>The prints are sleeved together in a custom envelope matching the book. </p>
