Papers relating to Lord Lamington’s governorship of Bombay, India. Letters and administrative notes concern budget surpluses and recommendations for local use; development of a program for inoculation against the plague; administrative and diplomatic matters in India; the relations between Hindus and Muslims, Europeans and Indians. Correspondents include George Nathaniel Curzon, Marquis Curzon; Gilbert John Murray Kynynmond Elliot, Earl of Minto; Sir Shahu Chhatrapati, Maharaja of Kolhapur; Horatio Herbert Kitchener, Earl of Kitchener; and John Morley, Viscount Morley. Includes two letter books containing regular and detailed dispatches from the governor to the Marquis Curzon, the Governor-general of India, and Lord Minto, the Viceroy. Handwritten indices to the letter books refer to various persons and topics such as administration, agriculture, the army, commerce, the courts, education, public finance, industry, journalism, public health, social life and customs, the British protectorate of Aden, and transportation, especially railroads.
