<bioghist>
<p>Nora Chaffin was born in Cyprus Creek, NC and received her A. B. in 1924 from Trinity College in Durham and her Ph.D. from Duke University.  She did post-graduate work at Columbia University and was awarded Phi Beta Kappa.  Chaffin was on the history faculty of Duke University from 1935 to 1944. Chaffin was dean of women at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN from 1944 until her retirement in 1966.  She joined the Vanderbilt faculty in 1944 as an assistant professor of history, was named an associate professor in 1946 and was promoted to professor of history in 1950.  She was named dean emeritus upon her retirement.  She died February 5, 1981 at age 81.  She authored the book <title render="italic">Trinity College, 1832-1892: the beginnings of Duke University</title>.</p>
