<abstract encodinganalog="520">The collection contains memoranda, policy statements, wage and salary information, pay range documentation, and various other materials relating to employee relations and personnel management at Duke University. </abstract>

<event>The position of Personnel Director first appeared in the University Bulletin. The appointee, Walter G. Cooper, reported to the Business Manager and Comptroller. The Personnel Department was given authority over all "employees of the University who are not directly connected in a professional capacity with its social or academic activities." </event>
