         <abstract encodinganalog="545" label="Abstract">Harry L. Levy (1906-1981) served as a
		  professor and dean of students at Hunter College, dean and
		  vice-chancellor of the City University of New York,
		  professor of the humanities at Fordham University, and
		  visiting professor of classical studies at Duke University.
		  Levy wrote several books and numerous articles; he
		  specialized in the Roman poet Claudian, and authored major
		  works on Ovid and Lucian. Papers include correspondence,
		  subject files, articles, and reprints written and collected
		  by Harry L. Levy, relating to his research in classical
		  studies, and his roles as a professor and
		  administrator.</abstract>

         <head>Biographical Note</head>
         <p>Harry L. Levy was born in New York City in 1906,
		  and received his bachelor of arts degree from City College
		  of New York, and masters and doctoral degrees from Columbia
		  University. He was a professor and dean of students at
		  Hunter College, dean and vice-chancellor of the City
		  University of New York, professor of the humanities at
		  Fordham University, and visiting professor of classical
		  studies at Duke University. Levy wrote several books and
		  numerous articles; he specialized in the Roman poet
		  Claudian, and authored major works on Ovid and Lucian. He
		  also served as editor of
		<title render="italic">Classical Weekly</title>, and
		as president of the American Philological Association. Levy
		received the Chancellor's Medal from CUNY in 1967, and the
		President's Medal from both Hunter College and Brooklyn
		College. He died in Durham, N.C., in 1981, survived by his
		wife, Ernestine Friedl.</p>
