Original recordings are closed to use. Digitized copies are available for some recordings. Please contact University Archives staff for more information.

Film, C and D series 1951-1974, undated

All film in this series is 16mm. The film is stored on a variety of different sized reels and in different sized cans. Sometimes the film is in a can without a reel, sometimes without a core.

Individuals related to Duke include Terry Sanford, Douglas M. Knight, Wright Tisdale, George Allen, Orin Pilkey, and Robert Menzies. In addition to numerous campus scenes, there is footage of the Duke Marine Lab, the ship Eastward, convocation, football from the 1950s, the discovery of the U.S.S. Monitor, the Epoch Campaign announcement, and outtakes from the film This is Duke.

This series is indexed by title and by subject in the card file index in Box 3.

The films in this series were originally numbered C-1 through C-164 and D-1 through D-8. That arrangement has been retained here. A number of unnumbered reels were received by the archives in the same boxes as these films and seem to belong in this series. Films without numbers are listed at the end of the series, arranged in alphabetical order by title.

Film, Numbered series, circa 1937-1960, undated

All film in this series is 16mm. The film is stored on a variety of different sized reels and in different sized cans.

Some of the subjects depicted include football, basketball, the 1954 Orange Bowl, Joe College, campus scenes, Duke Gardens, the Duke Marine Laboratory, commencement, and homecoming.

The film in this series is not indexed in the card file index in Box 3. However, a typewritten list titled Description of Films describes the contents of some of these films, and descriptions from the list have been included in this finding aid. The original list is in Folder 7, Box 16.

Since the majority of these films are numbered using a system other than the one used by Radio-TV Services, and since most of them appear to have been shot before the creation of the department, it is assumed that they were “inherited” from some other organization.

The films in this series were originally numbered 1 through 46. That arrangement has been retained here. A number of unnumbered reels were received by the archives in the same boxes as these films and seem to belong in this series. Films without numbers are listed at the end of the series, arranged in alphabetical order by title.

Film, Unnumbered 10 and 12 inch reels, circa 1948-1965, undated

All of the film in this sub-series is 16mm on 10 or 12-inch reels. These reels seem to have been packed together simply because they were all about the same size.

Some of the subjects depicted include Duke bands and the Marine Laboratory. There are original elements for the film Duke 140, as well as finished versions of the films Response to Our Challenge, Quest Without End, and This is Duke.

Since these are not numbered using the Radio-TV Department's numbering system, and since most of them appear to have been shot before the creation of the department, it is assumed that they were “inherited” from some other organization.

Films are arranged alphabetically by title.

This is Duke, 1954
(1 film reel : sd., col. ; 12 inch.)

Produced for Alumni Affairs, this promotional film is presented as a tour of the campus by a student. It contains footage of campus life, religious activities, commencement, homecoming, Joe College Weekend, classrooms, laboratories, the hospital, professional schools, and Duke Forest. A section towards the end has footage of many senior administrators.

From a note in the University Archives collection file: The film This is Duke University was a 27-minute film done in the 1950s. Fred Whitener photographed most of the film and produced it. Harry Owen did the sound recording and titles. A mechanical engineering student (an announcer for WDBS, who had a good deep voice) did the narration. The film had a musical background. Allan Bone selected the music from records and it was dubbed with narration. Engineering did the sound recording on the equipment in the photograph. The film was shown all over the world, including on cruise ships. The total costs of this first film with sound, including a trip to N.Y. by Fred Whitenener and Harry Owen, was less than $1,000. Dr. Owen said it should be copied to video tape. Harry Owen, 6/12/85.

Film, Unnumbered 3 inch reels, circa 1948-1965, undated

All of the film in this sub-series is 16mm on 3-inch reels. These reels seem to have been packed in this box simply because they were all the same size. Most of them appear to have been shot before the creation of the Radio TV Services, so it is assumed that they were “inherited” from some other organization.

Some of the subjects depicted include homecoming, Joe College, the Marine Laboratory, Duke Gardens, football, other athletics, commencement, various campus scenes, and the Epoch Campaign Announcement.

When they were acquired by the Archives, many of these reels were undated. Most of them, however, are in their original film manufacturer's boxes. Sometimes the box has a postmark on it, indicating when the film was mailed after being processed. In this case, the postmark is used to date the film if there is no other indication of date. Most boxes also have an expiration date-a “Develop Before” or “Process Before” date. When there is no shoot date or postmark, the expiration date is used to date the film, under the assumption that it provides a general time period in which the film was shot.

Films are arranged chronologically by shoot date, postmark, or expiration date, followed by films for which no date could be determined. These are arranged in alphabetical order by title.

Historical Note

Established in 1954 as part of the Office of Information Services (now the Office of News and Communications,) Radio TV Services supervises the production of materials for radio and television, assists in the preparation of audio-visual materials needed by the university, and promotes the University's exposure to local, state, and national audiences. Harry Durham was the director from 1964-1966, followed by Charlie Braswell, who held the position until 1988.

The office produced a daily news program, The News of Duke, and a weekly radio program, Challenges in Education (which eventually aired on more than 100 stations, including Voice of America and the Armed Forces Network). It also made documentary films, such as Medicine at the Crossroads (1966). It covers events and functions on campus, including trustee meetings, convocations, and protests. It sets up news conferences in cooperation with local and national media, interviews university personnel, and provides features on students for their home-town media.
