<head>Biographical Note</head>

<bioghist>
<p>James Fred Rippy was born October 27, 1892 in Nubia, Tennessee.  He married Mary Dozier Allen on August 19, 1915. He became a faculty member within the Department of History at Duke University in 1926 and taught until September 1936, when he left Durham to take a position at the University of Chicago.  Upon retirement, he returned to Durham. </p>
