<abstract label="Abstract" encodinganalog="545">The Talent Identification Program (TIP) was established in 1980. TIP identifies gifted seventh graders, and the students then spend a summer at Duke taking courses taught by the University's faculty.  The program is supported by endowments and fees. </abstract>

<p>Also, all or portions of this collection may be housed off-site in Duke University's Library Service Center. Consequently, there may be a 24-hour delay in obtaining these materials.</p>
<p>Please contact Research Services staff before visiting the University Archives to use this collection.</p>
<p>For a period of twenty-five years from the origin of the material, permission in writing from the office of origin and the University Archivist is required for use. After twenty-five years, records that have been processed may be consulted with the permission of the University Archivist.</p>

<head>Historical Note</head>

<p>The Talent Identification Program (TIP) was established in 1980; Robert N. Sawyer was the program's director.  TIP identifies gifted seventh graders based on ther SAT and ACT scores.  The students then spend a Summer at Duke taking courses taught by the University's faculty; foreign study is also provided.  The program is supported by endowments and fees.  Sawyer resigned as director in 1990.</p>
