Historical Note

<bioghist>

York House was an independent cross-sectional living group formed at Duke University in the 1961-1962 academic year. York House, along with the now defunct Lancaster House, became a permanent living group in 1964. In 1978, it was the only non-selective, cross-sectional co-ed dormitory on West Campus. York House sought to promote friendship and unity among its diverse members.

Residents of York House took ski trips, hosted a backgammon tournament and cookouts, had ice cream socials and formal dance parties. Semester plans normally included parties, a breakfast, movie nights, bowling nights, and study breaks. York House residents also collected books from faculty and students to create a small reference library. In the late 1960s, house members published The White Rose, an informational handbook for house members.

York House was located in Edens Quad and was part of the Edens Federation, a unifying body for advocacy, activity planning, community building, and decision making. The Edens Federation was established in the late 1970s for West Campus residents of Mirecourt, Taylor, Burton, Lancaster, Tabard, and York Houses. As a residential unit, York House had to conform to rules set by the Office of Student Affairs and the Office of Housing Management.
