Europe -- Description and Travel

Included in this group of 122 records are pamphlets, newspapers, clippings, guides -- many of them illustrated. Some items have pull-out maps, and others have very fine and sometimes quite large engravings.

Dates range from 1798 to 1940.

Although this is a small sub-collection, it has some interesting pieces which are valuable primarily for their aesthetic qualities. Countries and place names include the Alps, Switzerland, England, Scotland, France, Albania, Greece, Poland, and Malta.

Individuals of interest include: Primo Levi, Emilio Teza, Marcel Reymond, Andrea Navagero (S), and Marco Polo (S).

There are some areas of overlapping subjects, for example, when a pamphlet concerns local folkloric customs; in this case the item most likely would be found under "Italy -- Social Life and Customs." During particular periods in history, some areas of Italy were not yet part of what we now know as the modern Italian state. In general these areas (such as the Trento region) are considered for simplicity's sake to belong under the Italian sub-heading ("Italy -- Travel and Description").
