The ROAD (Resource of Outdoor Advertising Descriptions) project, a supplement to the generously funded National Endowment for the Humanities grant for processing outdoor advertising collections, is the result of teamwork and coordination between two departments at the Duke University Libraries.

The outdoor advertising materials are part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History; the staff of the Hartman Center provided selection, processing information, and item description. The Web Services staff implemented the conversion of descriptive information from a relational database to its presence on the web in an XML-encoded format. This included creating the search scripting and presentation of search results.
