The Duke University Archives’s sports film collections contain 16mm film and videotape of Duke University football and men's basketball games.
- Football films and videos date from 1935 to 1994.
- Men's basketball films and videos date from 1947 to 1996.
Many games were not filmed, so only those games with film in our sports films collections are described on this site. Other than the brief clips offered on this site’s main page, these films are not available for viewing online.
These films were made by and for the Duke University coaching staffs, and do not have the features common to televised games:
- Most of the films are silent.
- Earlier films were shot in black and white. More recent films are in color.
- The films were often cut and spliced, depending on which plays the coaching staff wanted to review. As a result, the films may not show the complete game or be in the order the game was played.
Many of the films exhibit physical condition issues common to older films. These issues have been noted in the descriptions of these films, and may impact our ability to provide copies of them.
For information about purchasing copies of these films or scheduling a viewing of any of the films at the Rubenstein Library's reading room, please visit our "Viewing Films or Requesting Copies
