Title: Lead Weight Author: Marcus Aurelius Basilides son of Orphitus Place: Ionia? 7.5 cm. x 7.5 cm. with a pierced handle of 2.0 cm height used to hang the weight from the scale. Mold made. One side has inscribed in a recessed square the weight, LEITRA, i.e. one liter. The letters were cut into the mold and are thus raised on the lead weight. There are four erotes? in the four corners of the incused square.The sides of the incused square are decorated with hatching as is the outer edge of the weight. The other side has the name of the agoranomos M(arkos) AUR(elios) BASILEIDOU ORPHITOU AGORANOMOU (In Greek letters). The name is written in a circle which is formed of a double circle with hatches. There are scattered hatch marks on the surface outside the circle. The letters are slightly raised and were thus cut into the mold. They are carelessly made and impinge in some cases on the circle itself. Avoirdupois weight is 12.1 ounces. Descriptive database available in repository.
