Handy, W[illiam] C[hristopher] (1873-1958)

The "Father of the Blues"; as a composer, he helped bridge the lighter ragtime sound to the more direct emotional appeal of the blues. His two most famous compositions are "Memphis Blues" and "St. Louis Blues."
