Get an AIM Screen Name

  1. Go to the AOL screen name registration page

  2. Type in your Desired Screen Name.
    This name should be 3-16 letters or numbers. It must start with a letter. You cannot use any special characters (! @ # $ % ...) or spaces as part of your name.

  3. Type in a Password.
    Your password should be 4-16 letters or numbers. It cannot be the same as your screen name or your first or last name.

  4. Re-type your Password.

  5. Type in your Display Name. The display name only changes your screen name in your own account. All other users will see only your screen name.

  6. Fill in the In Case You Forget Your Password and Security Check and click Submit.

  7. Unless the screen name you have chosen is unique, you will get the following message:

    Sorry, [screen name] is already registered as a Screen Name.
    Please try again or let us suggest a Screen Name for you.

    Either try another screen name or allow AIM to suggest a screen name for you. This may take several attempts before you find a screen name that is not already being used.

  8. Once you have found a unique screen name, you can sign in to AIM and IM Dukeref with your questions.

  9. Note: AOL will send you an e-mail message to confirm your registration. You must reply within 48 hours or your Screen Name will be deleted from Instant Messenger and you will have to register again.
