To maintain the Libraries’ collections, furnishings, and study environment, the Duke University Libraries have adopted the following policies regarding food and drink in library facilities:
- Light snacks and covered drinks are permitted in most areas, but noisy, messy, and strong-smelling foods are prohibited.
- Library users are expected to throw away all trash as they leave their study spots.
- Some library spaces are designated as food-free areas. No food is permitted in Bostock Library’s Carpenter Reading Room, the tower reading room adjacent to it, or Lilly Library’s Thomas Room. Both food and drinks are prohibited in all public spaces in the Rubenstein Library.
- Enforcement will rely primarily on signage and self-policing. Library security officers will address egregious violations.
