Group Study Spaces

Room Information

Perkins and Bostock Libraries both contain rooms that are maintained for group study purposes. Many of these rooms are available on a first come, first served basis, however groups who wish to study in these rooms have priority. Please vacate a room if a group wishes to use it and you are studying alone.

The Link, located on the lower level of Perkins Library, also offers group study areas.  Please visit their website for more information.

As in all other areas of the library, please adhere to the Food and Drink Policy when using group study rooms, and clean up before you leave.

Group Study Room Reservations

Members of the Duke community are also able to reserve selected group study rooms in Perkins and Bostock libraries for their activities. The seven group study rooms will be listed on the Duke 25Live network.

The reservation process is completely automated. Members of the Duke community can request a group study room by visiting the 25Live website and entering their NetID and password. The website shows which rooms are available and when, and allows users to submit an online reservation for their chosen date and time.

While single individuals may use group study rooms, priority usage is for groups of two or more people with proof of advance reservation.

Groups with reservations should bring their printed reservation confirmation with them to the room. Users without reservations must vacate the room when requested by a group with proof of valid reservation.

The group study rooms may be reserved for a period of up to three hours. Groups are limited to one reservation per day.

For more information, visit this overview of Duke's 25Live website, which explains how to use the room reservation system and also features a video tutorial for scheduling rooms.

24 Hour Study Spaces

The Von der Heyden Pavilion (the Perk) and the Gothic Reading Room are both open 24 hours for use by members of the Duke Community, unless otherwise stated.  After hours entry is by Duke Card access only.

  • Von der Heyden Pavilion
Also known as the Perk, the Von der Heyden Pavilion is the glass walled room located just off the main lobby in Perkins Library.
  • Gothic Reading Room
The Gothic Reading Room is located on the second floor of the old building of Perkins Library.  Both the reading room and the space just outside it may be used for study space by members of the Duke Community during times when the library itself is closed.  Entering through the main lobby of Perkins Library, proceed down the long hallway to your left.  Take the elevator or stairs on your right up to the second floor.  The open space with tables is available for study space and the Gothic is through the doors to the left.

**These rooms allow the user to watch VHS tapes or DVDs, as well as having the capability to hook up a laptop to the plasma TVs in the rooms.  Directions on how to use the equipment are posted in the rooms.
