Lockers & Carrels

The ongoing renovation of Perkins Library has created a drastically reduced supply of study carrels available to our patrons. We regret any inconvenience this may cause.

Lockers

Lockers are available to any registered Duke University student or faculty member on a first-come, first-served basis. Lockers are located on the first, second, and third floors of the Perkins Building. Locker assignments are made at the Circulation Offices, Perkins Library. A non-refundable $5.00 cash deposit is required for each key and/or lock.

Carrels

Carrels are awarded to Duke University Faculty and Visiting Faculty whenever possible on a first requested-first accommodated basis.

Closed carrels are also assigned to full time doctoral candidates who have passed their prelims, with preference given to the humanities and social sciences, as availability allows. Graduate student occupancy of these carrels is subject to change and will be reviewed yearly.

Closed carrel occupants must keep their carrels free from food or alcohol, open flame, and illicit substances. Carrels may not be occupied when the facility is closed. Please keep the window in the door of your carrel free from obstructions, the fire marshal requires that the interior be visible at all times. All library owned books in your carrel must be checked out to you and have a carrel slip in the item. Please inform the circulation desk assistants when you borrow an item, that you intend to keep it in your carrel. Carrels will be periodically inspected by carrel attendants to insure that no library materials without carrel slips are present. Duke owned books without carrel slips will be returned to the stacks.

Many unassigned open carrels are located on all floors of the library. These may be used by any student. However, any books left in these carrels will be collected and reshelved.

A $5.00 non-refundable deposit is required for each key.

We currently have a lengthy wait list for carrels, to join it...

  1. Please go to http://catalog.library.duke.edu/
  2. Enter Carrel Reservation in the "Keywords" search box. This will bring up a web page with Carrel Reservation List as the item title.
  3. Click on the link stating "Perkins/Bostock (1/0)" just like you would to request a book and proceed as directed.

This feature will enable you to secure and monitor your place on the wait list through the Libraries Web site.

Carrels will be in extremely short supply until the 2008-9 academic year. Sign up early to beat the rush then.

Thank You
