Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Document Delivery Services

How do I renew a book?
If the book is not currently due and/or overdue, you may renew it online:  Login to your account from http://library.duke.edu/libraries/document-delivery.html, click on “Checked out items,” select the transaction number of the item you wish to renew, and then click “Renew request” (in red at top of page).  Currently due and/or overdue items must be renewed through the Document Delivery Office at documentdelivery@duke.edu.

Whom do I contact if I have a problem or question about Document Delivery?
Contact Document Delivery at 660-5890 or documentdelivery@duke.edu for questions regarding a request or your account. This is a heavily used account. Please allow at least 24 hours for a response.

What items should not be requested through Document Delivery?
Electronic books and textbooks may not be requested through Document Delivery. DVDs and other multimedia items will be processed on an individual case.

May I request a PDF of an item (article or book chapter) that is located at Duke?
Electronic delivery of articles (as PDF) is only available to faculty, staff, graduate, and distance education students. We do not  provide this service to undergraduate students.

When can I expect my request to arrive?

Articles, books and electronically delivered articles from NC State, UNC and NCCU usually arrive within 3 days of processing. Other requests may take up to 9 days for arrival.

What if I forget my password?
Your Document Delivery (ILLiad) account may be accessed by your Duke net ID and password. Please contact the OIT Helpdesk at (919) 684-2200 for assistance with your net ID and password.

How do I view my Document Delivery (ILLiad) account?
You may access your Document Delivery (ILLiad) account from http://library.duke.edu/libraries/document-delivery.html.

Why don’t I see all my older requests when I look at my request history?

We periodically purge older records from ILLiad. Our policy is to keep requests online for several years in order to comply with record keeping requirements in regards to copyright law.

What are the services for Study Abroad students?
Duke Libraries support Study Abroad students with desktop delivery of journal articles and book chapters.  If you wish to take advantage of this service during your time abroad, please contact the Document Delivery Services department at documentdelivery@duke.edu.  Upon verification of your study abroad status, your interlibrary loan account will be updated to allow this service.

How do I request a dissertation?
Dissertations and theses are sometimes difficult to obtain from the libraries of granting institutions because many keep only a non-circulating, archival copy.  We will, however, attempt to obtain loans from libraries that hold circulating copies.  Before requesting a dissertation, however, please confirm that it is not already available online through ProQuest.  We do not borrow dissertations that are available electronically.
