Integrating Special & Digital Collections into Writing 20

Successful collaboration

In Spring 2008, Lynn Eaton and Emily Daly worked with Keith Wilhite's Writing 20: ReWriting the 1950s class. Students engaged with library resources in three ways:

  • Traditional library instruction session in Lilly (Emily)
  • Visit to Rare Book Room to explore Hartman Center materials AND time in 023 to explore Ad*Access (Emily and Lynn)
  • Visit to Special Collections Reading Room and Perkins Library (Emily and Lynn)

Professor Wilhite asked students to create visual annotations of ads they found in Ad*Access or the Hartman Center in hopes that...

  • his students would "provide a cultural context for the images" they selected
  • that their text would "offer an 'argument' about the relationship between the image and 1950s U.S. culture"

Continued collaboration

In Fall 2008 and Spring 2009, Keith had his Writing 20 students meet with Emily Daly to explore secondary sources and Kelly Wooten to engage with primary sources from the Sallie Bingham Center and then craft analytic responses to the sources they found most interesting.
