Alison Amoroso Papers (1996-1999): Duke (1987) and Harvard graduate who co-founded Women Express, Inc., the non-profit publisher of Teen Voices, a magazine by and for teenagers and young women; social worker and therapist. Collection consists of a folder containing press releases, history, and interviews documenting Amoroso's work with Teen Voices. Collection also contains the work of the magazine's teen writers. Issues of Teen Voices are also held at Duke.
Bitch Records (1996-2008): Semiannual feminist magazine, edited and published by Lisa Jervis in San Francisco, Calif., beginning in 1996. Chiefly production records for magazine issues including drafts and edited copy for articles, page layouts, and color proofs. Includes editorial correspondence; research files; promotional and subscription material; microcassette and audiocassette tapes containing interviews with people featured in the magazine, radio interviews with Jervis, and roundtable discussions among staff; budget and accounting information. Issues of Bitch are also held at Duke.
Bust Records (1993-2000): Originally a photocopied zine founded in 1993, now an influential third-wave feminist magazine. Collection documents behind-the-scenes work. Materials include a complete run of the magazine; layouts and copy editing material of early and later issues; biographies of contributors; article submissions; column material; advertisement documentation; correspondence; press coverage of Bust; promotional Bust material; material related to the publication and promotion of the book The Bust Guide to the New Girl Order; and a variety of graphic items including photographs, drawings, slides, and prints. Issues of Bust are also held at Duke.
Common Woman Chorus Records (1970s-2003): Administrative files and records from Common Woman Chorus; sheet music, skits and programs from performances; and many newsletters and correspondence from other feminist and gay men's choruses such as Cincinnati's Women's Choir, Columbus Women's Chorus, GALA Choruses. The Common Woman Chorus is a feminist and non-profit organization "serving the Triangle [Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, NC] since 1983." 16 linear ft.
Paula Kamen Papers (1971-2000): Author, journalist, feminist scholar, and playwright; one of the first to describe the third wave of feminism. Research files, clippings, manuscripts, correspondence, publicity materials, recorded interviews and transcripts. 42 linear ft.
Rock Against Sexism Records, (1981-1994): Formed in Boston, Mass., in the early 1980s as an activist group involved with the local music and arts scene. Rock Against Sexism (RAS) followed in the DIY tradition of punk music and subculture, producing its own zine, organizing direct action protests, and putting on shows in local venues. RAS prefigured the riot grrrl movement, giving women more access to punk subculture. Also includes administrative information and printed material relating to the zine, Rock Against Sexism as a group, and the punk bands the group promoted.
Sisterhood is Global Institute Records (1973-2004): International feminist NGO founded in 1984 by Robin Morgan and Simone de Beauvoir. Files relating to the organization's conferences and international advocacy work. 113.7 linear ft.
Sandra Stringer Papers (1995-2001): The collection consists an autobiographical statement and a complete run of ATTAGIRL, a self-published, personal zine written by Sandra Stringer. Early issues feature contributions from friends and family, while later issues are written in a journal format. Topics vary from issue to issue, but often include social life and customs, trends in computer technology, music and live band performances, travel to destinations in the United States, and current events.
Young Writers Papers (2000-2002): Emily Chamberlain is a writing teacher at the Carolina Friends School in Durham, where she teaches writing to young women during the summers at the Duke Young Writers Camp. Collection includes short essays, poems, and journal entries written by girls in the camp. Parts of collection under restricted access.
Jennifer Zervakis Papers (1991-2001): Chicago native and current resident of Durham, NC; Duke graduate; created comic-zine Strange Growths in 1991. Includes an autobiographical statement and thirteen issues of Strange Growths.
Women's Zine Collections: Subject guide and searchable database of zines by women and girls from the early 1990s to the present.
