Uses interviews and scenes in school classrooms to identify forms of undesirable stereotyping, with emphasis on sexism. Recommends ways educators can help students avoid forming sex role stereotypes, such as encouraging boys and girls to take classes which were originally limited to one sex or the other, and leading class discussions to identify and dispel traditional stereotypes. Includes interviews with authors Nancy Reeves and Stephanie Waxman, and with a number of educators. Designed for inservice training of teachers, counselors and school administrators.

Discusses social conditions that prevented women from publishing their writings until the 19th century. Examines concerns of women writers in the 20th century. Includes excerpts from such well-known writers as Charlotte and Emily Bronte, Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott, Anne Sexton, Adrienne Rich, and Virginia Woolf.
