The Mary Lily Research Grants
Overview
The Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture documents the public and private lives of women through a wide variety of published and unpublished sources. Collections of personal papers, family papers, and organizational records complement print sources such as books and periodicals. Particular strengths of the Sallie Bingham Center's collections are the history of feminist activism and theory, prescriptive literature, girls' literature, artist's books by women, lay and ordained church women, gender expression, women's sexuality, and the history and culture of women in the South. Any faculty member, graduate or undergraduate student, or independent scholar with a research project directly related to the collections held by the Bingham Center or to women's history and culture is eligible to apply. All applicants must reside beyond a 50 mile radius of Durham, NC. Grant money may be used for travel to the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library, costs of copying pertinent archival resources, and living expenses while pursuing research here, including accommodations and meals. The maximum award per applicant is $1,000. We strongly encourage applicants to contact our research services librarian before applying for the grant. We can lead you to potential sources of which you may not otherwise be aware.
Application Process
Download and complete an application form (Word document). Electronic grant submission is preferred: send application and other documentation as an attachment to RBMSCL_Grants@notes.duke.edu. Applications by mail or fax will also be accepted (address and fax number below). Graduate and undergraduate students or their advisors should mail recommendations to the address below. If you wish to apply to more than one center for the same project, simply check the appropriate boxes at the top of the application form to indicate that you have chosen this option. Grants will not exceed $1,000 even if awarded jointly. More details are included in the grant application form.
The next cycle of awards will be for use between March 2010 and August 2011. Applications must be received or postmarked by January 29, 2010. Awards will be announced after March 15, 2010. If you have questions, e-mail cwhc@duke.edu or call 919-660-5967.
