Resources Beyond Duke

Thanks to the latest innovations in telecommunications technology, we have access to a world of resources that are not physically housed at Duke. Here are some relevant and engrossing resources on the subject of women and music that can be found on the Internet through the World Wide Web. Also included is the Ladyslipper Listen Line, a telephone service that offers browsing access to the world's best catalog of music by women.

American Music Center

A non-for-profit contemporary music information and resource center, this site contains membership and grant information, NEA news, opportunities, publications, and more. Not exclusively for women, but a good way to find out the latest happenings in the music world.

The International Alliance for Women in Music

This resource on women in music includes information on membership, publications, opportunities, other women's music organizations, course syllabi for women in music courses, bibliographies, discographies, historical information on women composers, and future festivals. One of the most comprehensive women-in-music sites on the World Wide Web.

Ladyslipper, Inc.

Ladyslipper, Inc. is a non-profit, tax exempt music publishing house and independent record label located here in Durham, NC. It was established in 1975 to heighten awareness of women's achievements in music as well as broaden the scope and availability of works by women writers, performers, and composers (and non-sexist male artists). Their catalog is itself a resource for the study of women in music as it contains over 2,000 titles of music by women that is currently in print.

In addition to their WWW site, Ladyslipper offers The Listen Line, which is accessible any time day or night, is easy to use and a lot of fun. With it, the caller can sample as many as three tracks per album listed in the Ladyslipper catalog. The basic commands are: 1=previews of things to come; 2=news from Ladyslipper; 3=information about Ladyslipper in general; and * (star key)=a help message, which can be accessed any time during the call.
