The library's holdings in this area are focused primarily on literary accounts of idealized states or communities, emphasizing political structure. The Glenn Negley Collection of Utopian Literature is a core collection in this area, though some collections relating to utopias can be found in other areas.
There is a 1965 published guide to the collection: Utopia Collection of the Duke University Library, though a number of works have been added since that time. In addition, there is Professor Negley's definitive Utopian literature: a bibliography with a supplementary listing of works influential in utopian thought, an annotated copy of which is maintained by the Special Collections Library.
Collecting focus on fictional accounts of idealized states or communities with political organization as an important theme. (The collection also includes “dystopias,” inverted utopias that are typically satirical and ironic.) In addition, items with utopian themes of special interest for Duke faculty and programs in such areas as religion, women’s studies, history, and cultural studies are also included.
