The Archive of Documentary Arts collects, preserves, and promotes access to photographs and moving image materials related to social change, human rights, occupational culture, migration, race and ethnicity, gender, the American South, and African American history and culture. Holdings span the history of photography from the earliest nineteenth-century cased photographs to the latest digital technology prints. Current collecting focuses on work by contemporary photographers.
Donors who contribute $50 or more to the Archive will become a member of the Friends of the Duke University Libraries and receive a complimentary copy of Beyond Beauty: The Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University, a 128-page full-color publication that presents the history of the Archive and contains over a hundred images from its collections. The amount of the gift beyond $25 is tax-deductible.
