Allen Building Sit-in, November 13, 1967

In October 1967, the Associated Students of Duke University passed a statute that prohibited Duke organizations from using any facilities where segregation was permitted. When presented as a resolution for student vote, however, it was defeated. The Afro-American Society demanded that the administration prohibit the use of segregated facilities, and staged a day-long "study-in" in President Douglas M. Knight's office. The University responded three days later by prohibiting the use of segregated facilities.
