Lee Sorensen received his graduate degrees in art history and library science both from The University of Chicago. His publications include articles, "Art Bibliographies: A Survey of their Development, 1595-1821" Library Quarterly 56 (1986), book chapters, “What’s Special About Special Collections?” Handbook on Art and Design Libraries (2017) and encyclopedia entries, "Bibliography of Art," (2003), "Art Dealers" (2018), and the art historians "Maurice Rheims" and "Federico Zeri" (2018), all for the online Oxford Dictionary of Art. A consultant for the arts in biographical dictionaries, including the Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography, he has been on the advisory board for Oxford University Press' Dictionary of Art since 2004. Twice an executive board member of the Art Libraries Society of North America, he also served as that society's web administrator during the years of its inception. For thirty years he has edited the Dictionary of Art Historians,, hosted by Duke University, which he founded. Sorensen is an academic advisor to first- and second-year students at the Universty; he received its Advisor of the Year award in 2018. He currently serves as Duke's representative for the art section of the Ivy Plus Library Confederation.
