The Curator provides dynamic and innovative leadership for the Archive of Documentary Arts (ADA), one of several specialized subject areas within the Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library.  The Curator builds distinctive collections of photographs, moving images, audio recordings, and other formats through purchases and gifts; integrates the collections into academic programs through teaching and reference consultation; develops public programs, exhibits and outreach activities related to ADA collections; participates in financial development for the Archive, and supports departments that describe and facilitate access to the collections.

Responsibilities

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT:   (Approximately 20%)

  • In consultation with Duke faculty and the Head of Rubenstein Collection Development, develops and implements a collection policy to build collections related to documentary studies in all formats, including photography, moving images, audio recordings and text. Solicits gifts and evaluates potential purchases. Negotiates rights, access, and ownership agreements with photographers, filmmakers, and other creators. Develops, manages and monitors budgets assigned to the ADA. Coordinates the physical receipt and intake of newly acquired materials with the Order Management and the Rubenstein Technical Services Departments. Travels to fairs and to visit creators as needed and appropriate.

TEACHING AND INSTRUCTION (Approximately 15%)

  • Collaborates with Duke faculty and with library instructors to integrate ADA collections into undergraduate and graduate courses.

PUBLIC RELATIONS AND OUTREACH:  (Approximately 15%)

  • Promotes ADA collections to the Duke community, to the Triangle community, and to a national and international audience.  Partners with programs, departments and centers on campus to plan public programs that highlight ADA strengths and new acquisitions; including symposia, readings, lectures, film screenings, and performances.  Participates in the Rubenstein Library’s social media and contributes to or produces print publications related to ADA collections.  Works with the Duke University Libraries’ (DUL) Director of Communications to respond to media requests related to the ADA. 

EXHIBITION CURATION(Approximately 10%)

  • With the Head of Exhibition Services develops the exhibition schedule for the Rubenstein Library’s Photography Gallery. The Curator regularly personally curates exhibits, usually one per year. This may include the selection of materials for exhibition, design of exhibition layouts, and the creation of interpretive information including wall text and labels.

RESEARCH SERVICES: (Approximately 15%)

  • In conjunction with the Rubenstein Research Services Department (RL-RS) provides advanced research consultation related to Duke’s collections, including responding to reference questions and meeting with researchers one-on-one. Promotes use of subject-specific information resources and services in ways that meet user needs and expectations and utilizing current technologies and information tools. Works with the Research Services department to develop and implement policies related to licensing, reproduction, and exhibition loans. Supports research and instruction in conjunction with Perkins and Lilly library staff as needed. Participates regularly in staffing the weekday and weekend reference desk.

DESCRIPTION AND DISCOVERY:  (Approximately 10%)

  • In conjunction with the Rubenstein Library Technical Services Department (RL-TS), prioritizes the processing, cataloging, and digitization of ADA collections providing information and support to facilitate these tasks. Works closely with the Visual Materials Processing Archivist and Audiovisual Archivist.  Collaborates with the head of Digital Projects and Programs and the Digital Collections Projects Coordinator on the selection, development, and implementation of digital projects related to ADA collections.

DEVELOPMENT:  (Approximately 5%)

  • With the DUL Development officer and the Rubenstein Library Curator of Collections, develops and implements a development plan including donor relations, development events and grant writing. 

LIBRARY AND UNIVERSITY ACTIVITIES: (Approximately 5%)

  • Participates in the planning, review, and implementation of the goals, policies, and procedures of the Rubenstein Library and its Collection Development Department and in DUL activities as appropriate; serves on library and university committees. Carries out special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: (Approximately 5%)

  • Participates in professional and academic activities relating to documentary studies and professional librarianship. Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Growth and interest should be demonstrated through continuing development of professional knowledge and abilities, membership and participation in professional organizations, and service to the library, University, or community in a professional capacity.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • May supervise temporary project staff, a half-time graduate intern or undergraduate assistants as needed. 

Qualifications

Education:

Required:  Advanced degree in a relevant discipline, (American Studies, Art History, History, Liberal Studies, Archives Administration, Museum Studies, Photography or Film Studies, etc.), MLS from an ALA-accredited program or combination of experience and academic degree appropriate for the position.

Preferred:

An advanced degree in a relevant subject discipline and an advanced degree related to library science, archives administration, or museum studies.

Experience:

Required: Experience with and knowledge of documentary work in photography, film, or sound; familiarity with standard archival and library procedures; experience with exhibitions; demonstrated knowledge of and interest in the history of photography and of photographic processes; ability to relate effectively with users and donors of rare and unique materials; experience and skill in making public presentations; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; adaptive to working in a dynamic environment prone to change; record of successful project planning and management; ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team; demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer services.

Preferred: Three or more years of professional archival/special collections/museum experience; prior professional archival/collection development experience working in special collections or in collection development; prior experience working in an academic research library; knowledge of digital library environment; demonstrated leadership in establishing and implementing successful new programs; experience with print publishing, contracts and production; familiarity with web publishing technologies; experience with user and/or usability study methodologies; experience with assessment tools and methods; experience with developing digital collections; demonstrated success in grant writing and management.
