Single-page extra from the Athens Courier addressed "To the Chiefs, Head-Men and People of the Cherokee Nation," and signed by John Kennedy, Th. W. Wilson, U. S. Commissioners and Nat. Smith, Sup't. Cherokee Removal. Address alerts Cherokees remaining in lands east of the Mississippi to the 1836 Treaty of New Echota, "that five months of the time agreed upon in the treaty for your removal, only remain;" "the expenses of your journey will be paid by the Government, and on your arrival West of the Mississippi, you will be put in possession of lands infinitely superior to those you will leave;" and "We will not attempt to describe the evils that may fall upon you, if you are still obstinate, and refuse to conform to the requirements of the treaty."
