Nadell Prize for Book Collecting Rules and Guidelines

Contest Rules

1. Contestants must be regularly enrolled in a degree program, undergraduate or graduate/professional, at Duke University. 
2. Materials must be owned by one student and must have been collected by the student.  In the case of inheritance of materials, the collection must have been augmented by the student.  Please note the augmented materials in your representative bibliography. 
3. Contestants must submit an annotated bibliography of no more than 50 items (regardless of collection size). 
4. A previous winner may enter again if a different collection is submitted. 
5. A previous non-winner may enter again with the same collection, but only if the collection has been enhanced. 

Collection Guidelines

1. A collection should reflect a clearly defined unifying theme or interest.  It may incorporate books, either hardcover or paperback, manuscripts, ephemera, maps, prints and drawings, or autograph material, as long as they are germane to the collection's focus. 
2. The collection does not need to consist of rare books. 

Judging Guidelines

1. Each collection will be evaluated for the relationship between the contents of the collection and the stated organizing principle, as articulated in the submitted materials. 
2. The content of the collection and the quality of the essay describing the collection's theme and collection methodology will be of prime importance in the judging. 
3. Monetary value of the collection will not be a factor in judging.
