“At age 18, a couple of years after the death of my parents, I moved from India to the United States with all my belongings in one suitcase… My self-portrait is the constant that links my past with my present. In this work I am neither Indian nor American, but the link that chains generations together.”
- Priya Kambli
In Color Falls Down, Kambli explores the disconnection she felt after immigrating to the U.S. through recontextualizing her family photographs and objects she brought with her from India. The juxtaposition of ancestral images, self-portraits, and patterns create deeply personal moments in each piece. Viewed collectively, the works become a larger dialogue, unveiling connections between identity and memory, and visualizing the complexities of migration, transience, and cultural dualities.
Sponsored in part by Ellen and Gary Davis ‘P19 and the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation
