Historical Note

The New York Ladies' Southern Relief Association was founded by Mrs. Algernon Sydney Sullivan in New York City in December, 1866. Its purpose was to aid the starving and destitute women and children of the South, who had experienced crop failures following the Civil War. The organization collected funds, food, and clothing, and distributed them via southern clergy.
