Background

Scope and content:

Contains manuscripts of two of Cartter's published books: The Redistribution of Income in Postwar Britain (1955) and The Theory of Wages and Employment (1959). Items were untied and foldered for processing.

Biographical / historical:

Allan Murray Cartter (1922-1976) was a white American academic economist and administrator who was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. He received his BA from Colgate University in 1946 and his MA and PhD from Yale University in 1949 and 1952, respectively. From 1942-1945, he served in the US Army in the Second Cavalry Group of the European Theater.

He was a professor of economics and dean of the Graduate School at Duke University from 1959-1962. He left in 1963 to join the faculty at New York University, where he was chancellor from 1966-1972. He then became director of the Laboratory for Research on Higher Education and a professor of education at the University of California, Los Angeles. His research areas included national income analysis, labor, and tax policy.
