Historical Note

Duke Magazine was conceived in 1982 as the result of discussions between Laney Funderburk, Director of Alumni Affairs, John Piva, Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Development, and H. Keith Brodie, President of Duke. The magazine was intended to be an important method of communication with alumni, focusing exclusively on Duke and Duke-related content. In 1983, Laney Funderburk worked with the consulting firm Barton-Gillet Company on creating the magazine, and hired Robert Bliwise as the founding editor. The first issue was published in early 1984, and is published six times a year.

As the founding editor, Robert (Bob) Bliwise has overall responsibility for editorial direction and content of the magazine; he also teaches a seminar on magazine journalism at the Sanford School of Public Policy.
