ORIGINAL LEGAJOS AND DOCUMENTS

Although the collection includes many transcriptions and photostats of materials in Spanish archives, it also contains approximately 260 original documents acquired by Hamilton during his years in Spain. These royal cédulas, provisiones, pragmaticas, and proclamations date from between 1680 and 1830, with many examples from the reigns of Carlos III, Carlos IV, and Fernando VII.

The documents cover not only aspects of the Spanish economy, but also programs for economic development as promoted by the Bourbons, laws regulating use of natural resources (especially wood), and proclamations dealing with vagrancy, personal attire, and other social issues. They also include Carlos III's decree expelling the Jesuits from Spanish territory (1767), other royal orders concerning dissolution of Jesuit properties, and the declaration of comercio libre (1778)

In addition, the later documents relate important events of the Napoleonic era in Spain, including the uprising against the French on May 2, 1808 and the restoration of Fernando VII.
