As rail travel became more widespread in Italy, writers began publishing literature on traveling by train. One lively Mazzoni pamphlet on train travel from Florence to Leghorn, published in 1856, begins with a fascinating discussion of the connection between travel and the concept of time. This humorous pamphlet was written by none other than the author of Pinocchio, whose pen name was Carlo Collodi, but who uses his given name Carlo Lorenzini for this work. He was only thirty years old when it was published.

The text to the right refers to an American motto that "makes the man." What is the motto? "Time is money," of course, as evidenced by the replacement of the man's head by a coin...
