In this rare piece of ephemera, the innocent title "Almanac for Women" is in fact a cover for a long essay inciting political sentiment and action. No name is associated with this particular copy; how it managed to survive the Austrian censors can only be imagined. The phrase "Alle donne veramente italiane" ("To truly Italian women") is a reference to the presence of hated foreign authorities on Italian soil. In this pamphlet women are urged to spur their husbands, brothers, and lovers to action against the Austrians in order to unite Italy "from the Alps to the sea." In the same year the almanac was published, Giuseppe Mazzini, a key figure in the Risorgimento, formed a youth organization for the unification of Italy, a step on the long road to political freedom finally achieved in 1860.
