Though this title was meant to illustrate the strong ties and complete coordination of wills between Germany and Italy, in fact the relationship was anything but coordinated. The German Reich often kept Mussolini's regime in the dark about certain key events (for example, the invasion of Poland) and for this the Italians suffered serious embarrassments which reduced its office of propaganda to a shambles, and led to military defeats which cost thousands of lives.
